Greg Kot and Mavis Staples appear in conversation to discuss I’ll Take You There: Mavis Staples, the Staple Singers, and the Music That Shaped the Civil Rights Era at Harold Washington Library.
Greg Kot has been the music critic at the Chicago Tribune since 1990 and is the cohost of the nationally syndicated public-radio show Sound Opinions (soundopinions.org) on WBEZ-FM 91.5. He is the author of this season’s One Book, One Chicago pick, I’ll Take You There, as well as many other books.
Mavis Staples, the subject of I’ll Take You There, is one of Chicago’s best known icons. A musical legend who sold a million gospel records and a Civil Rights hero who walked beside Dr. Martin Luther King, Mavis has moved generations with her talent. Throughout her lifelong career, she has both inspired and worked with musicians from every genre and era, and has no plans to stop singing anytime soon. Join Greg and Mavis as they engage in a lively conversation about music, Chicago and freedom. There will be a book signing following the program.
