Hurry Down Sunshine

Michael Greenberg reads from Hurry Down Sunshine, his new memoir about coming
to terms with his 15-year-old daughter’s sudden mental illness.

Greenberg, a columnist for London's Times Literary Supplement, was living in Greenwich Village in 1996 when his 15-year-old daughter, Sally, suddenly became manic, importuning strangers and ranting in the streets about her newfound cosmic wisdom. She was a danger to herself and others, so her father and stepmother had her committed to a psychiatric facility.

Greenberg was no stranger to mental illness; he'd been caring for his dysfunctional brother most of their adult lives. Still, Sally was so brilliant, so caring, he couldnt bear the thought of her ending up like his brother.

During the 24 long days Sally spent in the hospital, Greenberg learned to cope. He watched a Hasidic family visiting with their mentally ill young man. He pondered his ex-wife going to cuddle with Sally, as if she were still a little girl....

Republican "Family Values"

Win McCormack joins us at The Book Cellar with a reading and signing of his exhaustively researched You Don't Know Me: A Citizen's Guide to Republican Family Values.

Stop by the store to catch some elephants with their pants down!

"Editor-in-chief of Tin House magazine, McCormack catalogues over 100 cases of sexual misconduct and criminality committed by Republican officials and supporters in an entertaining effort to expose the hypocrisy of America's self-professed "family values" party.

"Readers hungry for a helping of schadenfreude will relish the A-Z illustrated collection of misdeeds featuring prominent GOP personalities involved in bestiality, pedophilia, incest, autoerotic asphyxiation and lengthier musings on the exploits of Republican heavyweights including Newt Gingrich, Bill O'Reilly and George W. Bush.

"Along the way, the author raises unintended questions; his crime blotter seems to speak less about GOP fai...

A Map Of Home

Author Randa Jarrar joins us at The Book Cellar to share her funny, charming, and heartbreaking book, A Map of Home.

Come on out for the reading and signing!

Nidali, the rebellious daughter of an Egyptian-Greek mother and a Palestinian father, narrates her story from her childhood in Kuwait, her early teenage years in Egypt (to where she and her family fled the 1990 Iraqi invasion), to her family's last flight to Texas. Nidali mixes humor with a loving and vibrant celebration of an eccentric middle-class family in the Arab world, and this perspective keeps her buoyant through the hardships she encounters: the humiliation of going through a checkpoint on a visit to her father's home on the West Bank; the fights with her father, who wants her to become a famous professor and stay away from boys; the end of her childhood as Iraq invades Kuwait on her thirteenth birthday; and the scare she gives her family when she runs away from home.

The War Behind Me

Local Pulitzer-Prize winner DEBORAH NELSON comes to The Book Cellar to share her latest work of nonfiction, The War Behind Me.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist
and a historian join forces to investigate a declassified Vietnam War archive. Most of the war crimes they discover have gone unpunished. This shocking exposé includes interviews with the men accused of committing atrocities, the witnesses who reported them, and the higher-ups who covered them up.

The War Behind Me establishes, sadly, the terrible fear that emerged from the horrors of My Lai—that its easy cover up suggested that deliberate killing of civilians was widespread in heavily contested areas of south Vietnam. Yes, this book says, it did happen, and yes, as at My Lai, many of those GIs who did the killing were as much victims as those they fired upon.”
—Seymour Hersh, author of Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib

“Young Americans went to Vietnam imbue...
